Carbon Ads alternative for developer sites
Short answer
Carbon Ads finds advertisers for invited developer and design sites, paying per 1,000 impressions. It is exclusive: only Carbon ads on that site. Selling a monthly sponsor spot gives you control over price and brand, but you must find the buyer and unbooked months earn nothing. Test on another site, or after leaving Carbon.
On this page
you have high developer or design traffic and want ads that fill themselves every month.
you want one small, cookieless, standard ad and no contact with advertisers.
Carbon hasn't invited you, or your audience is small but valuable to brands in its niche.
you want to set your own price and choose each sponsor.
At 50,000 pageviews a month: Your sponsor spots $80 asked, Carbon Ads $60–115.
Networks pay every month they fill. A spot pays for the months someone books.
Estimates from each network’s published rates and sites’ own advertise pages. More on prices
Carbon's range is its typical CPM, not a guaranteed rate. The sponsor figure is what similar sites ask for all their spots; compare it with paid bookings, not just a published price.
How Carbon Ads works
Carbon is run by BuySellAds. From its FAQ:
- Invitation only. Carbon reviews ad relevance to your audience, monthly pageviews, whether the site is actively maintained, whether there is room in the network, and whether you can follow its placement and exclusivity rules. No public traffic minimum is given.
- Exclusive. You agree to show only Carbon ads and not to use Carbon as backfill behind another network.
- Earnings. Carbon quotes a typical rate of $1.20 to $2.30 CPM, with no rate guaranteed. It does not publish its revenue split.
- Payouts. Since 1 September 2026, earnings are visible within 30 days and withdrawable within 60. Minimums depend on method: PayPal $20 (fees apply), check $50, wire $500 with a $35 fee. Open Collective payouts are quarterly on request.
- Who picks the ads. Carbon serves ads from its advertiser demand, matched to your content. You don't sell or price individual ads.
How Sponsor.st works
Paste one script tag, click where a spot goes and set a monthly price. Sponsors book calendar months and pay into your own Stripe or Dodo account; the ad goes live and comes down on its dates.

What you trade
let the network find advertisers for one small cookieless ad; earnings depend on traffic and demand.
need an invitation, show only Carbon ads, and earn in step with pageviews.
can start on any site today and price for who reads you, not just how many.
find and keep the sponsors yourself; a month nobody books stays empty.
Finding a sponsor
A network brings the advertiser. Here you do:
- Your booking page. Each spot gets its own page with its price and open months. Link it as “Advertise” in your footer or newsletter, and send it to brands that ask.
- A media kit. Make a one-page PDF with your audience and spots, for the brands you email.
- Who to ask. How to sell sponsorships covers finding brands that already sponsor sites like yours.
- The directory. Brands browse the Sponsor.st directory for sites to sponsor.
Common mistakes
- Comparing CPM to a monthly price without doing the maths. Multiply monthly views by the CPM and divide by 1,000 first.
- Adding other ads to a Carbon site. Its exclusivity rule forbids it.
- Forgetting payout thresholds. A wire needs $500 and costs $35; PayPal starts at $20.
- Expecting a sponsor spot to fill itself. Without a visible "Advertise" link, nobody books.
Keep Carbon while you try
